  • Design
The Fire HD 8 tablet shows significant improvement over the last models in terms of the device’s build and design. It is relatively more square, which makes it comfortable to hold. The front camera is now on the side, making the landscape orientation default for video calls. Further, it also comes with an SD card slot for external memory of up to 1 TB.

Fire HD 8 ships with Fire OS 7.3, which was introduced in Amazon’s Fire HD 10 tablet. It is android based but lacks Google services. The OS is primarily designed to promote Amazon products and might not be the right choice if you are not familiar with its infrastructure. For instance, there is no Google Play store, limiting the overall functionality related to applications.
  • Entertainment
There are several entertainment options available on the gadget. You can get millions of applications, eBooks, TV shows and games, and can also stream videos on Netflix, Disney+, Showtime, and Prime Video.
  • Alexa
Alexa is also supported by the Fire tablet and can do everything for you with the voice command. Whether it’s opening applications or sending messages, you can manage everything with Alexa. All you need to say is “Alexa,” and it will get to work – even if the screen is asleep.
  • Amazon kids
Amazon Fire HD 8 also comes with Amazon kids to help parents keep an eye on their children. They can create child profiles, limit screen time, and set specific goals that need to be achieved. The parental controls are advanced and easy to use as well.

Fire HD 8 vs. Fire HD 8 plus

Fire HD 8 also comes in a more advanced version – Amazon Fire HD 8 plus. Both tablets feature the same size and resolution; however, they differ mainly in RAM and charging options. The HD 8 plus comes with 3GB of RAM and features wireless charging compared to 2GB RAM and wire charging in the simple version. The OS in both is the same, and the overall functionality is similar as well. Fire HD 8 plus also comes with a 9W charger compared to the 5W one shipped with Fire HD 8. Due to the added features, HD 8 plus is slightly more expensive and is available for $109.99.

Verdict

If you are looking for an affordable tablet with all the features of high-end options, Amazon Fire HD 8 is a good option. However, despite the functionality, the quality is mediocre. For instance, if you want to use it for taking pictures, a 2MP camera is not good at all, especially at this point where the cameras have been improved significantly. The game mode is a good addition, though, and can come in handy if you want to use it for gaming.
